ASB Annual Report 2019

Two important messages in the ASB Annual Report of 2019: A message on Attitude and solidarity by Knut Fleckenstein, Federal Chairman of the ASB and a message on Respect and Recognition by Franz Müntefering President of the ASB

Attitude and solidarity

Care for the elderly was again one major focus of the ASB’s work in 2019. The nursing profession must become more attractive so that people in need of care can continue to receive high quality care. A crucial issue in this regard is payment according to collective agreement. In the National Association of Employers in the Care Sector (BVAP), which was cofounded by the ASB, we are jointly campaigning for the conclusion of a nationwide collective agreement for the care sector.

The ASB advocates for competition that is not carried out on the backs of employees or those in need of care but based on the quality of their work. It was about time!

Presenting the Annemarie Renger Award to Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, was particularly important to us. With this award, the ASB honoured her tireless work against anti-Semitism, which would also have pleased our former president very much. Annemarie Renger – in 2019 she would have been 100 years old – always thought always felt very connected to our prize winner. We all bear responsibility for ensuring that an era like National Socialism is never repeated and that neither homophobia nor anti-Semitic or xenophobic ideas continue to spread in Germany.

In the difficult times, we are living in due to the corona crisis, solidarity is more important than ever. The ASB continues to provide reliable help to everyone who needs it. But we can only continue our successful work with the ongoing support of our members and commitment of our volunteers. I would therefore like to thank you all for every contribution that helps us to continue with our mission in helping others.

Knut Fleckenstein

Federal Chairman

Respect and recognition

For more than five years, the ASB’s “Last Wishes Van” has been a success story. More than 2,000 last wishes of terminally ill patients have already been fulfilled and 23 vehicles are now on the road throughout Germany. But even the best idea is worth nothing without those who put it into practice. Our volunteer wish fulfillers dedicate themselves with a lot of heart and soul to this volunteer project entirely funded by donations. So much commitment deserves the highest respect!

The key to success is diversity. Here at the ASB, humanistic values have always determined our actions and our motto ‘We help here and now’ applies to all people without distinction. Values such as respect, solidarity and equality must be more than just words. We still have a long way to go, but together we can shorten it a bit every day. Given the current pandemic, the term ‘help’ suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. Without helping and respecting each other, we could not survive this global crisis. In this crisis, our Samaritans continue to give their best – they help here and now.

For this I would like to thank all our employees and volunteers in the ASB – whether they work in civil protection, care, elderly care, youth work or foreign aid – as well as our members, donors and sponsors. Without their commitment and support, the ASB would not be this energetic association, which has not only taken up the cause of helping but practices it every day.

Franz Müntefering

President
