ASB Foreign Aid

ASB Foreign Aid Department provides both direct emergency relief to people hit by man-made or natural disasters and longer-term rehabilitation measures designed to promote recovery and to rapidly help restore the livelihood of refugees, internally displaced persons and other vulnerable people. ASB currently has a portfolio of more than 50 relief, rehabilitation, development and DRR projects in countries like Niger, Nicaragua, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Nepal, Haiti, Georgia, Ukraine, Iraq and Greece.


ASB Greece

ASB started its activities in Greece in March 2016, focusing on the provision of Humanitarian Aid to refugees/migrants. In 2017 ASB Greece built the technical facilities and shelters for the Diavata camp. In 2018, ASB Greece acquired three accommodation sites in the Epirus Region (Katsikas, Filippiada and Doliana). In 2019, ASB with the funding of the Directorate – General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Union (DG HOME) and in coordination with IOM  implemented  the “Improving the Greek Reception System Through Site Management Support and Targeted Interventions in Long – Term Accommodation Sites” project. The project focused on Site Management Support (SMS) services and includes Protection and Non-Formal Education. In 2020 ASB with the funding of the Directorate – General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Union (DG HOME) and in coordination with IOM will implement the Program “Supporting the Greek Authorities in Managing the National Reception System for Asylum Seekers and Vulnerable Migrants (SMS)”.   The ASB country office is based in Thessaloniki, while the Epirus regional office is in Ioannina.


  1. Job Overview/Summary:


As the Site Management Support (SMS) actor at Diavata site in Thessaloniki, ASB implements a wide range of activities, including maintenance and repairs of the facilities and public networks, legal assistance, running of the Help Desk service, identification of individual needs and protection of highly vulnerable persons, access to public services within and outside the site and non-formal education activities.

The full SMS team in Diavata consists of the Senior SMS Officer, the Senior WASH Officer, the SMS Officer, Cultural Mediators and Camp Assistants.

The SMS team works together with the Protection, NFE and WASH/Shelter teams at the site and cooperates closely with the Greek authorities, other public organisations and non-governmental actors. Overall management and supervision is provided by the SMS Manager who is acting as the direct line manager of the SMS teams in North Greece and Epirus.

For the specific job opening, ASB is looking to employ a qualified professional to work in its site in Diavata as a SMS Cultural Mediator in Farsi/Dari language.

Under the overall supervision and management of the SMS Senior Officer, the cultural mediator will provide interpretation and cultural mediation services from Farsi to Greek and vice-versa or in other language requested, if spoken fluently.

The Cultural Mediator focuses on supporting all the activities in and outside of the camp where communication with the PoCs require interpretation. This can be for ASB staff, staff from the Greek Government, and staff from other NGOs or members of the communities where ASB works.

The candidate should be a good team player willing to help the population of concern and able to support the SMS team at the site and during delivery of activities and services.


Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Works together with the SMS, WASH/Shelter, Protection and NFE staff – to support the implementation of activities aimed at improving the life of PoCs in Diavata site
  • Facilitates interaction with refugees and migrants living in Diavata
  • Support with interpretation other public actors or organisations, according to the needs and as requested by his/her line manager
  • Ensuring the language used is culturally appropriate and relevant and that messages are well understood by the PoCs
  • Respects and understands the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures
  • Proceed with written translations for key messages essential to be communicated to the host population
  • Enhances communication and contact with communities – together with staff members – by organizing regular meetings with community members to discuss action plans, mobilize community participation and activities aimed at improving collaboration and relations between persons of concern and the host community
  • Support SMS activities related to data collection, population mappings and verification exercises
  • Support the Help Desk service
  • Participating in outreach methods



  1. Other Tasks:


  • Supports the Communication Officer of ASB in translating the key messaging towards the refugee population, ensuring access to ASB services.
  • Supports the M&E Officer of ASB in conducting surveys and ensuring that the ASB complaint mechanism is accessible for the refugees.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the line manager



  • During his/her work, uphold all relevant ASB standards and specifications for the position, codes of conduct, and humanitarian principles.
  • Act in a way that is sensitive to gender, protection, the environment and other important cross-cutting concerns.

  1. Requirements:
  • Completed high school or higher education.
  • Spoken and written fluency in Farsi/Dari and good understanding of the relevant cultures.
  • Spoken and written fluency Greek and/or English or other languages would be an asset.
  • At least one year working experience in a related field; previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, flexible and wide understanding of the community’s needs.
  • Greek National, or legally allowed to work in Greece.
  • Patience, a ‘can-do’ mentality and politeness.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and priorities of different sectors of the community.
  • Literacy, numeracy, and record keeping skills.
